Regulating teachers tweets and facebook

http://www.bradenton.com/2010/09/28/2609663/social-networking-topic-of-policy.html

In Bradenton, Florida the school board is considering regulating what teachers post on their twitter or facebook accounts. They decided to create this policy because last year a teacher posted how he hated his students and jobs. I think that this is a great idea. Most parents and teachers really focus on how the students online activity should be regulated and they worry about what they post. Not many people seem to think about regulating the teachers online activity, which is why this article interests me. I think that both students and teachers should be regulated online. I have never even thought about this until I saw this article.

  1. Ashley - I am wondering if we should regulate everyone because of the poor decision made by one person? I think that we need to have guidelines for appropriate use of these tools, but regulate sounds like we are getting closer to saying we don't trust people.

  2. Ashley, I understand what you are saying, but i feel like that is not the school systems business, but rather the responsibility of individuals to be professional and respectful with their privileges.

  3. I agree with Michelle. I do think some things need to be regulated, but the people should know what to write and what not to write online. Everyone should be respectful and reasonable when it comes to talking online because everyone needs to remember that once its on the internet, it gets sent to everyone and it can be viewed and saved by people who you may want to hide it from. Everyone has access to the internet so we have to make it our responsibility to make respectful comments.

  5. Ashley, I don't think everything should be regulated. Kids should know whether or not to post something on the internet because everyone can see it. Using the internet is a privilege. If you don't you the interent with your own responsability, you will loose that privilege.

  6. Ashley, I also think that if students are be regulated online for facebook and twitter, than the teachers should too. I think sometimes people forget that most of the teachers have a facebook or twitter, or both. Even though i don't really agree with the fact that students should be regulated online at school, I think that when a school decides to regulate what the students are doing they need to put into thought that the teachers could be posting the same things. I also never really thought about this until this post.

  7. I think that we need to have guidelines for appropriate use of these tools. I feel like the kids that cant go by the rules that are set up they should be punished for it. If everybody else is punished then that person feels like hay maybe next time I will not get in trouble. And u have to remember that everything u do on the internet everybody sees sooner or later. And when you are trying to get a job and they look into your face book, twitter or another thing you are on and if you have anything that can incriminate you and their goes that job opportunity.

  8. I don't think the school systems should regulate students and teachers facebook pages and twitter accounts because I believe it is the users responsibility to watch what they post. Maybe there should be a punishment for people who abuse facebook and twitter accounts.
